It's Not You, It's Your Headshot Photographer

We already know how vital headshots are to an actor, and how a great headshot can mean the difference between getting the role of your dreams - or not. I hear actors lament over and over about how frustrated they’ve been in the past with the outcome of their headshots, and they’re not alone. Professional headshots are important to you and your career, and you should be able to feel in control during the entire process!

Think Back Over Your Session

If you are feeling like your headshots are missing something, do me a favor and think back over your session. Did your photographer show you your looks as they were being captured in order to ensure your happiness? Were you comfortable expressing your honest opinion with them? Did you feel that you were given a chance to approve your hair and makeup? Was your opinion over clothing considered? Lastly, and most importantly, did your photographer create an atmosphere conducive to asking questions and voicing your concerns? Your photography session is as stated, all about “you”, and if the photographer isn’t listening to you and making everything tailored to your needs, you should think about looking elsewhere.

Finding Your Perfect Match

These questions are all vital pieces to the entire headshot process, and will affect the final outcome. At WeHo Headshots, we make sure that every single client is comfortable and happy by practicing these important steps. This process should also include the time and effort that you put into researching and finding a headshot photographer that fits your needs and you feel would be a good match to you - every photographer has their own unique style - does your current photographer’s style match your needs? If the answer is no, it might be time to break up with your headshot photographer.

Do Your Research

Here are a couple of questions to ask yourself in order to help with your research on finding a great headshot photographer. Log on to their website or portfolio page - do you like the photographer’s “voice” on their website? If they didn’t answer all of your questions on the website, were they able to answer your email or phone call with a response to any questions you may have had? These questions are the most prominent when deciding if you want to work with a specific photographer, because if you are left with more questions than answers, your session will more than likely leave you feeling disappointed - but more importantly, your headshot images won’t be what you envisioned.

Speak Up!

Remember that when you do finally choose your headshot photographer, the process should feel easy. Many people in this industry have felt that updating headshots has become a burden - but it should never feel that way! When you find a photographer who is experienced and willing to work with you to get you the best results possible, YOU should feel as though you’re in control - not the other way around. So, make sure to speak up and voice your concerns, and feel comfortable when asking questions if you need to.

Breathe!

If you feel like you need to take a pause or break, let your photographer know! Headshots can be exhausting, but what’s most important to me as a photographer is that you’re comfortable and happy during the entire process. So, take it easy, ask questions when you need to, and most importantly - have fun! Your final product will reflect on how you felt during the session, and your personality shines through the most when you are comfortable and happy.
